What Is AI SEO? A Simple Guide to Smarter Search Strategy

Written by Alex Morgan Founder & Head of Strategy, Link Build Forge

AI SEO is the practice of optimising your brand to be retrieved, named, and cited by generative search tools — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini — as well as traditional search engines.

It doesn’t replace SEO. It extends it. You still need crawlable pages, relevant content, and authority. What changed is that authority is increasingly measured through brand mentions and entity signals, not backlinks alone. This guide explains what AI SEO means in plain language and how to start without chasing hype.

How AI SEO Differs From Classic SEO

Classic SEO optimises for rankings and clicks. You target keywords, build links, improve pages, and measure traffic. AI SEO optimises for citation share — how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers for buyer prompts.

Research across large brand datasets shows branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility far more strongly than raw backlink counts. That doesn’t mean links stopped mattering. It means links are one input among several — and mentions on trusted third-party sources often carry more weight for generative retrieval.

Where AI Answers Come From

Generative search tools don’t invent recommendations from nothing. They retrieve information from sources they deem credible — often overlapping with Google’s top organic results, plus review platforms, news articles, Reddit threads, Wikipedia, and industry publications.

If your brand isn’t mentioned on those source types, you’re unlikely to appear in AI answers — even if your website ranks reasonably well. AI SEO closes that gap by building presence where models already look.

What Actually Moves AI Visibility

  • Earned editorial coverage on publications AI already cites for your category.
  • Comparison and review listicles — “best X for Y” articles are heavily retrieved by AI tools during buyer research.
  • Community presence on Reddit, forums, and Q&A sites where authentic discussions happen.
  • Clear entity signals — consistent naming, structured data, profiles on LinkedIn, G2, Trustpilot, and relevant directories.
  • Original data and expert commentary that journalists and AI models can reference.
  • Strong organic pages — most AI citations link back to content ranking in Google’s top results.

AI SEO vs Using AI for SEO

These are different things. AI SEO means optimising for AI-powered search and discovery. Using AI for SEO means deploying AI tools to speed up keyword research, draft content, or analyse data.

Using AI to write hundreds of blog posts without expert review won’t improve AI SEO — thin content rarely ranks or gets cited. Using AI to identify prompt gaps, audit competitor citations, and prioritise outreach targets absolutely will.

Who Needs AI SEO?

Any business whose buyers research online before contacting them — which is most B2B and B2C service businesses in 2026. It’s especially critical for:

  • SaaS companies competing in crowded software categories.
  • Health and wellness providers where trust and credentials matter.
  • Professional services where buyers compare multiple firms.
  • Local businesses competing for “best near me” and AI-generated local recommendations.

A Simple Starting Framework

You don’t need a massive budget to begin:

  • Run 15–20 buyer prompts in AI tools monthly. Note who gets named and which domains are cited.
  • Audit the sources those answers reference. That’s your outreach target list.
  • Ensure your money pages are technically sound, fast, and clearly written.
  • Build or update profiles on review sites and directories already appearing in citations.
  • Launch a focused digital PR or link building campaign to earn mentions on those target sources.

What AI SEO Is Not

It’s not a guarantee of ChatGPT rankings. No agency can honestly promise permanent placement in AI answers. It’s not about tricking models with hidden text or schema spam. And it’s not separate from good marketing — the brands that win in AI search are usually the ones already respected in their category.

AI SEO isn’t a trick. It’s SEO with the full discovery landscape in view — rankings, mentions, entity signals, and the prompts buyers use before they ever reach your website.
